Just as there are different parts that make up the body, there are different parts that make up the nerve system; brain, spinal cord, nerve roots, fibers, etc. The primary 'part' chiropractors are focused on is the nerve root; that portion of the spinal cord that emerges from in between the vertebrae of the spine and distribute information to and from every cell, tissue and organ of your body.

Two Major Components

If we could measure the two functional components (autonomic and motor) of the nerve system at this level (the nerve root) we could asses how the end organ, cell, or tissue is functioning. Based on the amount, or lack thereof, of never energy flowing to them, we can make some fair assumptions as to how well they are functioning before they become, symptomatic.

The Presence of Pain is Not a Hallmark of Function 

If a pain nerve fiber is irritated, your brain will register PAIN! But these pain fibers only make up about 1/9 of the nerve root. Other fibers making up the bulk of the nerve root carry other information between the brain and the body; information vital to the function of that group of cells and ultimately, the entire organism... that's YOU!
